Drama As Protesters Burn Azikiwe’s Statue In Anambra, Say He Precipitated Their Issues (Photograph)
The statue was attacked
Revered former Nigerian chief, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe’s statue has been attacked in Anambra.
The PUNCH experiences that the statue of the late Azikiwe, a pioneer President of Nigeria, was burnt by hoodlums infiltrating #EndSARS protesters in Onitsha, Anambra State.
The statue was at Denis Memorial Grammar Faculty Roundabout, Awka Avenue, Onitsha, often called Zik Roundabout.
Whereas vandalising the effigy, the protesters have been heard shouting, “You set us on this mess by championing one Nigeria,” “You’re the reason for our hassle,” amongst different uncomplimentary remarks.
Narrating the incident, a kinsman of Azikiwe, Victor Ononye, described the incident as heresy and sacrilegious.
He stated, “The Proper Hon Dr Nnamdi Benjamin Azikiwe, the primary President of Federal Republic of Nigeria, should be expressing regrets wherever his spirit is, for attracting independence to Nigeria.
“What occurred on the DMGS Roundabout, Onitsha, which I noticed with my very own eyes evoked tears.
“Miscreants, hoodlums, gutter snippers, loafers, charlatans, nitwits, nincompoops and bastards besieged the statue, hung a used tyre on his neck, poured petrol and set it on hearth.
“They decapitated his hand and went away together with his title workers. That was the peak of ingratitude by the bastards who’re unaware of historical past.
“They descended on the varied objects used for adornment of the location and tore them to items. They have been few in quantity. Why the police, who have been a stone’s throw away to the roundabout, couldn’t intervene was a thriller.
“I noticed two vigilante males brandishing rifles and using on a bike. They stopped and the boys hailed them and so they drove off.”
